The Sherriff Centre at St James’ Church is a not-for-profit organisation. We are a registered charity and have a trading subsidiary that operates our Post Office, The Sanctuary Café, Hullabaloo soft play plus events and private hire. Profits from our trading activities go to fund the work of our charity to provide services to the local community.
The Sherriff Centre is open Monday to Saturday 9am – 5pm.
The Post Office is open Monday to Friday only, 9am – 5pm.
We are closed on Sundays for morning church services and private bookings in the afternoon.
Our journey began back in 2012 and was born out of the desire to retain a Post Office in the area when the postmaster at the West End Lane site wished to retire and close his branch. Father Andrew, who until the summer of 2017, was the vicar at St James’, saw a tweet from local estate agents Dutch and Dutch who were looking for alternative venues to host the Post Office. St James’ church was suggested and subsequently accepted as a viable site.
The addition of The Sanctuary Cafe and Hullabaloo soft play was soon part of the planning process and business model, as it was clear from the outset that to ensure its long-term financial sustainability our project had to have a wide appeal and varied income streams.
The journey to open was an eventful one, facing both logistical and financial challenges and after many months of business plans, presentations, fundraising and consultations, building work started in April 2014. We opened our doors for the first time at 1pm on 18th July, 2014 and with the church bell ringing out to announce our arrival a new era for St James and West Hampstead had begun!
Our first charity project launched in 2016, our free, independent and FCA-registered debt advice project. This was followed by the installation of Camden’s first community fridge in 2018. During Covid, we set up The Food Share Project to tackle food poverty and waste and we continued to develop our original vision by adding additional needs sessions within our soft play in 2018.
We began a partnership with the global live music organisation Sofar Sounds in 2019 and are now an established key venue for these events and others that we host ourselves.
We work in partnership with St James Church and are jointly responsible for the upkeep of the beautiful heritage building that we are based in.
We celebrate our 10-year anniversary in July 2024 and have ambitious plans for the future.
